Becoming a successful person takes more than simply working hard at your job and waiting for a dose of good luck. Many of today’s most successful people do plenty of things outside of their work in order to move ahead in life and maintain their success. These habits don’t include making wealthy investments, cashing in lottery tickets, or hanging out on an expensive yacht. These are activities that absolutely everybody, including you, can do on a daily basis. Here are some new habits you should pick up if you want to be successful:
Make time to read
Everyone loves a good book. Whether you enjoy personal development books like Mindset by Carol Dweck or if you prefer contemporary and fictional literature, there’s nothing quite like getting caught up in a good novel. The best books are ones that you can get most value from.
You know who else likes to read? Rich people do. Author Tom Corely discovered this phenomenon when he spent five years comparing the lifestyle habits of rich people (those with an annual income of at least £160,000 and have at least 3.2 million in assets) to the lifestyle habits of people with not a lot of money. Corely found that 88% of wealthy people and only 2% of the not so well-off people spend at least half an hour each day reading for career or educational purposes. Furthermore, 63% of wealthy people listen to audiobooks on the way to work while only 5% of poor people do the same.
Part of what makes some people so successful is that they never stop improving themselves. You can learn almost anything you want by simply reading enough. For example, Elon Musk (founder of Space-X and Tesla) was able to teach himself rocket science after reading enough about it.
There are so many different books out there that can teach you how to improve your life and career. Why not take up the opportunity to learn something from them? You never know where it can take you.
Seek inspiration whenever you can
If you want to develop your skills and improve then immerse yourself in it. For example, if you want to be better at public speaking then attend more events where there are speakers or watch TedEx talks online, take notes of the speakers good points and bad points. This will help when you master your public speaking skills.
Acclaimed horror author Stephen King once wrote that anyone who wants to become a successful writer must read and write a lot. “There’s no way around these two things that I’m aware of, no shortcut,” he wrote. Similarly, any famous movie director can rattle off all of their favourite films and every comedian can list everyone who’s ever made them laugh. If you want to get good at something, you often have to follow in the footsteps of others.
Working out has countless benefits. The most obvious reason people work out is because they want to get healthy or look really good. However, there are plenty of other reasons you should consider hitting the gym.
Consistent exercise isn’t just good for your body; it’s also good for your mind. It gets your blood flowing throughout your whole body, including your brain, which helps your memory and creative thinking skills. Exercise also increases your willpower because it trains your body and mind to push yourself to the limits in order to hit your goals. People who exercise constantly are less likely to be depressed and more likely to be happy and therefore more productive.
Above all, working out produces endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones of the brain. If you consistently exercise, your body will produce more and more of these hormones, which will improve your mood. Working out can easily become a daily habit thanks to endorphins. You will eventually crave the feeling and motivate yourself to work out even more.
Network and build connections
Sometimes, the key to success is not what you know, but who you know. Many people find their next career or big opportunity simply by asking the right people. Go to as many networking events as you can and try to reach out to as many people as possible. Networking events can also be a lot of fun and it’s always a great experience to meet other like-minded individuals.
According to Corely’s research, 79% of wealthy people and only 16% of poor people network for at least five hours each month. Five hours really isn’t that long when you take into consideration how long a month is. It’s a fun activity that can produce some serious results.
Wake up early
There are only so many hours in each day, so why not make the most of what you have? Time can fly by pretty quickly and the day could soon be over when you least expect it. That’s why you should try and wake up a little bit earlier than usual in order to make use of all your spare free time. Most of today’s successful CEOs are all early risers. All of that extra time gives them a chance to do a little bit extra work. Regardless if it’s checking email or getting some exercise, they find ways to make the most of their time.
It’s also useful to be productive in the morning because you often have more willpower to do the things that you wouldn’t be able to do at night. Since people’s energy and willpower often wane throughout the day, they usually find themselves unable to be very productive after a long day at work.
Nobody can become successful overnight. It takes a lot of time and effort. The best way to achieve your lofty goals is to start by setting habits. Create good habits for yourself and encourage yourself to find ways to improve your skills and abilities every day. With enough time and practice, you can learn anything that you want and accomplish more than you have ever dreamed of.
